GREAT NEWS FOR WIGMOREHeritage Lottery Fund has just confirmed the development grant to re-order St James’ Church in Wigmore. This is fantastic news for the church and the village and is a giant leap forward in saving this historic and wonderful building. The church will always be a church and available for services and fundraising ventures but will be given a new lease of life as an Interpretive and Heritage Centre. The vision is to install all of the necessary services – loos, kitchens, heating and top quality technical facilities so that the church can be used for educational purposes as well as commercial ticketed events such as concerts and live streaming which will make it sustainable. Access around the church will be greatly improved so that people with restricted mobility will be able to visit. We hope to arrange at least one disabled parking space and have an arrangement with Wigmore School to use their car park for functions which will be organised in the evenings, at weekends and during school holidays. So, all in all, this will be a much more accessible and comfortable venue and will hopefully attract many more people to its services and events. The first phase of the project is expected to take a year and involves all of the preparatory work to cover the various surveys, architects designs and plans and the many permissions that have to be obtained to work in a Grade I listed building. We will then confirm our application for monies for the second phase of the project which will be the actual build and this is expected to take around 9 months – so with lots of luck the re-ordered building should be up and running for Christmas 2018.It has taken nearly two years to get to this stage and we are delighted that HLF have recognised the importance of this building and wish to work with us to keep it open. Sadly planning permission for this project has been refused on the grounds that parking and road traffic would cause disruption
